Life Expectancy

Life expectancy (LE) is a key measure of the health status of a population and is closely related to the levels of deprivation.

Life expectancy at birth for the population living in an area represents the average number of years a person would expect to live based on contemporary mortality rates.

Data for Trafford shows (PHOF, 2020):

  • Male LE is at 80.2 years and higher (statistically significant) than the average of 79.4 years for England.
  • Female LE has reached 83.8 years and higher (statistically significant) than England average of 83.1 years.

Inequalities in life expectancy:

Inequality in LE is one of the most important measures of health inequality. The systematic relationship between life expectancy and deprivation, known as social gradient in health, is present in Trafford. There are wide inequalities in LE between the most and least deprived areas in Trafford.

  • There is a 8.5 year gap in Male LE between the most and least deprived areas of Trafford for the period 2018-2020, only smaller than 10.1 years in 2010-2012 (PHOF, 2020).
  • The gap for female LE is 7.4 years for period 2018-2020, wider than 6.3 years in 2010-2012 (PHOF, 2020).

Healthy Life Expectancy:

Healthy life expectancy (HLE) is an important summary measure of mortality and morbidity in populations which brings an element of quality of life to length of life.  HLE represents the average number of years a person would expect to live in good health based on contemporary mortality rates and prevalence of self-reported good health.

Data for Trafford for 2018-2020 shows:

  • Healthy life expectancy at birth for males is 66.3 years and higher (statistically significant) than the average of 63.1 for England.
  • Healthy life expectancy at birth for females is 66.9 years and higher (statistically significant) than the average of 63.9 for England.

Inequalities in Healthy Life Expectancy:

Inequality in HLE is another key measure of health inequalities. No recent data is present for inequalities in HLE in Trafford. The latest data is for the period 2009-2013. Data for 2009-2013 combined show a gap in HLE at birth of 15.8 years for males and 16.1 years for females between the least and the most deprived areas of Trafford (PHOF, 2013).

Disability Free Life Expectancy

Disability Free Life Expectancy (DFLE) is an indicator of the average number of years a person can expect to live without a physical or mental health condition or disability that would limit daily activity. Data for Trafford for 2018-2020 shows:

  • Male DFLE at birth is 63.6 years, statistically similar to the England average (62.4 years)
  • Female DFLE at birth is 62.4 years, statistically similar to the England average (60.9 years)
